At the height of the Big Band era, I was really into it, and listened
voraciously to as many as I could. To my untrained ears, there were
only two bands who used string sections effectively: Artie Shaw and
Tommy Dorsey. The rest were all preteners to the throne. Harry James
wasn't really bad, but nothing compared to the Shaw and Dorsey strings
They blended beautifully, and contributed a lushness to the sswinging
arrangements these guys had.
