Listmates, I'm working on an arrangement of "Here Comes Your Pappy With The
Wrong Kind Of Load" for the Bob Cats. The tune was sung by Nappy Lamare and
was recorded in 1935 when the Crosby band was being formed and working under
the name "Clark Randall and his Orchestra" (AKA the Gil Rodin Orchestra). Nappy
later performed the number at the occasion of the Joe Sullivan Benefit
Concert in Chicago, and probably a lot more in the early days of the band. I know
of no other performances.

Our reason for reviving the tune, which I'm hoping I can convince Bob Leary
to learn (he does several other Nappy tunes with us), is that 2005 is Nappy's
Centennial year. We'll be paying tribute at our appearances throughout the
country for the next 11 months.

My question to you students of repertoire: What is the origin of the tune?
With a gospel choir-like refrain at the end of each stanza, it sounds like it
may have been adapted from Minstrel show material. The composer credits
provided by Halcyon indicate that the tune was written by Hamilton, Tobias &
Lamare.

Anyway, the chart will be ready in a week. Any insight as to the tune's
background will be much appreciated with proper citation given at live
performances.

Thanks, Ed Metz for the Bob Cats
