Hi Bob"

I imagine what you heard was a reproduction of a Cd recording off of a
bad vinyl recording if you heard ticks and pops, and a needle hitting
the track, because you don't get that with lazer technology, so the
person who mastered it probably just made a bad copy of a bad record
onto a CD and then reproduced them to sell them as CDs. Especially if
it came from a South american Country, not necessarily up to snuff with
the latest technological equipment and engineers.

All you need to get a bad copy of the record is to put a microphone in
front of the speakers that is going into a digital system to record it,
and transfer it into a digital format, then you can burn a Cd and
manufacture from it. I showed the audio boys that trick at High
Fidelity and AES shows in 1978 when the major labels were trying to
make folks believe that the CD would erase record pirating and
counterfeiting. If you can hear the reproduced sound, you can record
it to another recording medium and remanufacture it from there, you
will just lose quality in the reproduction each step that you take.
Cheers,

Tom Wiggins
