All the artists have international credentials playing at jazz festivals and
parties around the world.
Filling the piano slot for the allstar group will be Derek Smith who
originally hails from England and has been a prominent jazz figure in the
U.S. for many years. He was with the "Tonight Show" band for seven years
and has performed with notables from Frank Sinatra to Luciano Pavarotti,
from Placido Domingo to Robert Palmer.
Warren Vache on cornet is a supremely accomplished, versatile and rare
performer who has spent years playing with such greats as Rosemary Clooney,
Benny Goodman, Hank Jones, Woody Herman, Bobby Short and Benny Carter.
On tenor sax is Harry Allen whose roots are firmly based in the school of
tenor sax plying made famous in the 1930s and 40s by Ben Webster, Coleman
Hawkins, Lester Young, and later, Stan Getz and Zoot Sims.
Nicki Parrott on string bass came to New York City from Australia in 1994 on
an Arts Council grant to study with the internationally acclaimed bassist,
Ruffus Reid. She stayed on and has performed with Clark Terry, Billy
Taylor, Marlena Shaw, Bucky Pizzarelli and plays weekly with Les Paul at the
Iridium Jazz Club in New York City.
On drums is Denver's own Don Grove who has played professionally for over 30
years. Although he prefers jazz and blues, he was on tour with The Doobie
Brothers in the 70's and recorded with Six Penny Opera.
Guest artist from Sydney, Australia, Bob Barnard on cornet has been called
the "Louis Armstrong" of Australia. He performs regularly in Europe and the
U.S. and has played and recorded with many jazz greats including Ralph
Sutton, Peanuts Hucko, Dave McKenna and Milt Hinton.
The Jim Cullum Jazz Band plays at its own club, The Landing, located on the
Riverwalk in San Antonio and has done so for 40 years. Logically, the name
of their public radio show is "Riverwalk - Live from the Landing". This
weekly show airs on some 200 public radio stations around the country
including KUVO in Denver.
The Titan Hot Seven possesses a powerhouse ensemble capable of going from a
whisper to a roar in the space of one tune. This much in demand group is
back to Summit Jazz by popular demand. A most versatile band, the Titans
feature traditional jazz, swing, ballads, ragtime, novelty tunes and
spontaneous, outrageous humor in every one of their sets.
Another very high-energy group is Cornet Chop Suey that is making its first
appearance at Summit Jazz. This talented band has hit the traditional jazz
festival circuit with a bang in the past couple of years and has gained a
great following of dedicated fans. Their repertoire includes tunes from the
early 1900's to contemporary jump, jazz and swing.
IVORY & GOLD features Jeff Barnhart on piano and Anne Barnhart on flute.
As a duet they bring much variety to their performances, due in large part
to their musical rapport and diverse backgrounds.
The Alan Frederickson Jazz Ensemble is always a local favorite and
crowd-pleaser. The leader, Alan Frederickson, has been entertaining Denver
audiences for the past 45 years.
The Arapahoe High School Dry Creek Dixie Dawgs under the direction of Dr. Ed
Cannava will make a single Sunday morning performance.
