[Dixielandjazz] A prayer for N.O.

There was an excellent program a year or so ago on the History Channel about
the Galveston earthquake. There was essentially no indication where the
storm was going after it struck Cuba. The head of the Weather Bureau in
Galveston finally did get some indications that a storm was on the way, but
failed to act in time. Fortunately for New Orleans, that's not the case
with this storm.
Let's hope that everybody decides to evacuate, and to do so far enough
inland where the winds won't further endanger their lives. After the storm
strikes, wherever it may be, let's be generous with our donations to the Red
Cross and other relief organizations in their efforts to help those in need.
Fifteen years ago last week, my neighborhood was one of many struck by the
tornado that became most closely identified with the nearby town of
Plainfield, IL. Compared to the rest of our neighbors we got off lucky with
relatively minor damage (around $25,000), but we were still grateful to
those agencies that came in with canned food and bottled water that helped
us survive until the utilities could get up and running.

Friends,
The news at the moment is certainly grim! I know that news networks love to
play up the dire elements of new stories, but in this case it I certainly
hope that things won't be as bad as the projections.
None of us were alive on September 8, 1900 in Galveston, Texas where a
hurricane killed six thousand (SIX THOUSAND!!) people!
It's going to be a long night!!
I'll surely be praying for all those souls!!
Bill Gunter
