JOHN SHILLITO'S SELECT SIX

11 August 2005

Over the year's Clevedon Jazz Club has enjoyed the trumpet player who stands alongside Roger Marks - on Thursday 11 August, at the Club's regular Walton Park venue, that trumpet player brings his own band to entertain us. John Shillito, inspired by jazz greats like Louis Armstrong, Red Allen and Jabbo Smith, has played his trumpet and sung his songs at all the major UK festivals, as well as throughout Europe, in Russia, South Africa and also to good effect in New Orleans, Louisiana - the very home of jazz itself.

He started his musical career in his hometown of Sheffield in the nineteen-fifties and then moved to be based in London for 15 years. There he successfully formed his own group and toured the UK and Europe with some of the popular jazz bands of the period. Since heading south-west to settle in Devon in 1972, John has been in demand at "traditional" jazz venues in the region, working continuously with his own bands or making freelance guest appearances. As well as celebrating no less than 50 years of band-leading, he's also well known as the trumpet-lead in Roger Marks' Armada Jazz Band, a position he's held for seven years.

On 11 August, John features his Select Six, a most exciting line-up which he assembles from time to time, usually specifically for jazz festivals. It's a happy band that features a wide ranging and interesting repertoire of melodies and songs from the classic jazz and swing eras, all presented with style.

Teaming up with John in the front line is the fantastic reedman, John Ware on clarinet, alto and baritone saxes, and, on trombone, Bobby Fox. Although this is just an "occasional" band, the three front-line players link together in an accomplished, melodic and exciting way, reflecting their considerable experience. The rhythm section is just as thrilling. Barry Nicholls at the drums, John Whitock on banjo and Bob Jarvis completes the band on bass.

Expect some interesting and exciting moments, (and more than a little fun), in a session that will be one that you should not miss.

The doors at Clevedon Jazz Club's Walton Park Hotel venue open at 8pm, the music starts at 8.30pm and its £6-50 'on the door' (£5 for Members!). Further details of this and all other Clevedon Jazz Club events, and Club membership are available from Trev or Bill on 0700 5806 252 or from the Club's web site at www.clevedonjazzclub.co.uk.
