Hi Tom.
I have a Spike Jones corner every week on my radio program, much to the
chagrin of the "Jazz Police" who complain that " It's not Jazz". I beg to
differ and have more supporters who enjoy the musicianship, mayhem and
clever parody that this bygone era produced. People who take themselves and
their music too seriously are missing the message that jazz is entertainment
afterall and musicians who are having fun are communicating their enjoyment
to others. I'm in favour of good humour, less pomposity, more theatre and
visual appeal in performance and fewer rules about what is or isn't jazz.
It's either good music or it's not. I grew up on the FHF+2 too and they got
it right.
Is there a DVD of Spike Jones available in the USA? I'll be there next week
and would love to get my hands on a copy.
Best regards,
Sam Meerkin, (still in Oz 'til 4th Oct.)
