Hi all,
The interesting and unique thing about jazz is that's it's created in the
moment among individuals. The "vision" per se is necessarily spontaneous
and is contributed to by all the artists in the group. Even during an
extended solo, isn't the soloist's unique vision being built on the
foundation of the rhythm section, which is made up of individuals creating
their own spontaneous ideas underneath in interplay with the soloist? The
influence of the soloist and the music around him or her is a communal
expression made up of individual voices. Therefore, in jazz, unless one is
playing completely by one's self, there is no chance of having only one
person's artistic vision present. I would argue that the product is no less
a piece of art than a completely solo effort and is actually an artistic
expression that one individual could never create on his or her own.
All the best,
Rob McCallum
