I agree they probably played tunes longer than the record limits, but
speculate that they probably sounded much the same. The records sound like
the style was second nature to them, which surely could have been
accomplished only by a LOT of playing. As for individual records, at the
tempos they sometimes play, I have to assume they were also well rehearsed,
perhaps even reading charts. 

I haven't done any research on the background, etc., so this is just
hypothesis...
