Tom (and all)
the free internet broadcasts we (and many other non-conformist,
non-commercial ) radio stations do (in direct opposition to the
thoughts of some FCC and other governmental and big business poo-bahs )
do sometimes conquer the problems of geography!
I know that some internet OKOM "broadcasters" can only afford to send
their programs over websites that either have a few "commercials" or
ask for donations. KFJC is a bit different because we only ask for
money once a year and we do not have "memberships" or "pledges" - we
just put out our hand (and signal) and say "here we are - the music is
important, radio is important, the listener is important, and money is
important..."
please check out www.kfjc.org if you feel like supporting our style of
independent radio, or also support your own local non-commercial radio
station that provides the music that you want to hear! Over the years
of doing my show I have heard from many folks who had a local OKOM
program in many parts of the country on an NPR station fall away to the
national feed of news and "Fressssh Arrrrgh" but there are still a few
programs around - search for them on the internet and give them your
support! If you know of them, tell your local jazz societies to list
their broadcasts in their bulletins (because the DJs are probably
already giving announcements about local performances and jazz society
events over the airwaves!
I have listened to KFAT/KHIP and KPIG for many years and really enjoy
what they are doing with non-conformist Country & Western music radio
(that was the station I was alluding to previously.) They have managed
to take a local station serving the Monterey/Santa Cruz California area
and have ALMOST made a success with it 25 years later ;-) They teeter
right on the edge all of the time - but if your definition of OKOM is a
bit flexible I suggest that you also check them out at www.kpig.com
(they use a limited version of Real Player to hear them - I know how
tight their budget is ;-)
OKOM is still on the radio - you just have to seek it out!
