There's food, drink, dancing, and lots of nice people to meet!
STJS proudly presents this shining star from the Northeast. Colleagues
who¹ve known Randy since their days with the Jim Cullum Band, like pianist
John Sheridan and clarinetist Allan Vaché (one of Randy¹s college buddies),
praise Randy as both a brilliant musician and a very dear friend.
Originally from Madison, NJ, he now resides in Saylorsburg, PA. Randy
just returned from the Sweet & Hot Music Festival in L.A., where he was
featured as both an all-star and a member of Banu Gibson¹s New Orleans Hot
Jazz band (15 sets total!). He returned home to play several gigs this week
before returning to CA this Sunday. (Yesterday, he performed at the
memorial service for Lawrence Rockefeller at the Riverside Church in NY.)
When he¹s not busy traveling for gigs around the NY area and across the
U.S., Randy likes to work on his golf game. (Last month, he shot an 83not
too shabby!)
Randy selected the trumpet as his instrument of choice at the early age
of nine. Although his original training was classical in nature and he was
selected for membership in All-State and All-American bands and orchestras,
Randy¹s musical interests leaned toward jazz. At the age of eighteen, Randy
began performing professionally, appearing frequently at Eddie Condon¹s Jazz
Club in NY. Here he learned from and performed with some of the great jazz
stars he listened to in school, including Pee-Wee Erwin, Vic Dickinson and
Connie Kay.
As the years passed, Randy could be found performing at numerous clubs
and jazz festivals throughout the U.S. His experience allowed him to
substitute with a wide variety of musical groups and fit in quickly. He even
taught himself to play the trombone to fill the position for the Happy Jazz
Band in Texas.
In the 1990s, Randy began actively performing at some of the many jazz
parties as an all-star, appearing with bands featuring Kenny Davern, Marty
Grosz, Jake Hanna, Bucky Pizzarelli, Dan Barrett, Howard Alden, Warren
Vaché, Tommy Newsom and many others. Allan Vaché wrote about Randy, ³... a
better musician you won¹t find anywhere.²
In addition to his 2003 appearance in the East Room of the White House,
Randy has been invited to perform at: the Sacramento Jazz Jubilee (with the
East Coast All-Stars), the March of Jazz in Florida, Jazz at Chautauqua
(jazz party), the Sweet & Hot Music Festival in Los Angeles, and the N.O.
Jazz Ascona festival in Switzerland. Last year, for Bix Beiderbecke's 100th
birthday, Randy accompanied three other cornetists in a tribute to Bix at
Jazz Ascona. (The other three were Tom Plethcer, Randy Sandke, and Dick
Sudhalter.) Reinhart has performed on the Broadway stage in ³Tommy Tune,
White Tie & Tails² and on radio for a 100th birthday tribute to Fats Waller
with Marty Grosz on NPR¹s radio show ³Fresh Air,² hosted by Terry Gross.
We're very pleased to have him out in CA, so please come and join us this
Sunday. We're planning to ask him to play a bit of trombone (swap with Jim
Maihack) as well as play a song with his left hand, like he did when he
broke his right wrist in 2002. (He makes it all look so easy!!!)
Randy can be heard on recordings made for ARBORS, AUDIOPHILE, JUMP, and
NAGEL-HEYER.
