[Dixielandjazz] The past

Hello all

Bill Haesler's Ben Webster story, and Steve Barbone's response, have raised
some some very interesting issues about the nature of "the past" in jazz.

I've long held the view that jazz is an art that has no past.

Please, Steve and others, before you reply, go to

http://www.bees.unsw.edu.au/staff/visiting/crouch/publications.html

and read my 1999 paper on this matter.

If this all sounds a bit heavy, let's finish on a note of humour -as
applicable to jazz as it is to writing.

Teacher to student - "Your work is both good and original; unfortunately,
the parts that are good are not original and the parts that are original
are not good".

All the best
Anton
