I feel we should acknowledge the Fats Waller Centenary - according to my
reference book he was born 100 years ago today. A great musician and a
wonderful entertainer.
You're absolutely right, amigo. My non-jazz-loving friends sometimes ask me
who was the greatest jazz figure of all time, and I unhesitatingly answer
"Duke Ellington -- but my favorite was Fats Waller." On KUVO, Denver's jazz
station, we were in the final day of our membership drive on Friday, but I
did manage to play "The Joint is Jumpin'," "Hold Tight" and "Twelfth Street
Rag" -- and the phones rang in response! I've been playing a Fats record
every Friday during 2004 -- "Fridays with Fats," I call it (damned clever,
no?), to positive response.
Last year Bix and Fatha Hines, this year Fats and Basie -- whose centennial
is coming up next year, does anyone know?
