[Dixielandjazz] Clarinet/Saxophone doubling

I find this thread most interesting.  As a listener, the only thing I 
can add is that the late Bob Helm of the Lu Watters Yerba Buena JB fame, 
played both clarinet and sop sax a lot, as well as alto, and he often 
switched instruments (during somebody else's solo) in the middle of a 
tune.  He once explained that he took up the soprano after the golden 
days of the YBJB has passed, and felt that it could work well in a trad 
setting.  I recall that he often might use the soprano for a solo, then 
switch back to clarinet for the out chorus.
