Weevil fans--
While i was in New Orleans last month, i stopped by George Buck's
Jazzology location (not really sure you could call it a 'store') and
talked with him a while and of course could not refrain from buying
some CDs.
The best one i bought was the new one from the Boll Weevil Jass
Band, which has not yet been announced, but it's called "You Gotta
See Your Mama" (BCD-51), Jean Kittrell with The Boll Weevil Jass
Band. George said something to the effect that he was delaying its
announcement until another CD by Jean Kittrell had been out for a
while (i assume this is the "Jean Kittrell Sings the Blues" with Tony
Parenti, JCD-26, which came out last summer).
The Boll Weevil CD is a re-issue of two LP's: the Boll Weevils'
"Strutting with the Weevils" (GHB-61) and "Jean Kittrell with the
Boll Weevil: Tain't Nobody's Business" (GHB-51), and it's a gem,
recorded in St. Louis in 1970. Dan Havens plays a great hot cornet,
and one of my favorite tuba-players Dick Remington was in fine form.
Jean Kittrell sings in great style, even though she was right on the
edge of laryngitis.
It has one peculiar feature, though, in the notes. In listing
the players, Al Rose says, "Dick Remington has just finished filing
the 'Excelsior Brass Band' label off his tuba. At 97 he still
retains all the verve and driving rhythm that made him famous during
his years with Manual Perez. In his horn case is a photograph which
bears the inscription, 'To my revered friend and teacher, Isidore
Barbarin.'" I don't know who he thinks he's talking about, but it
ain't the Dick Remington who played with the Boll Weevils and the
Alamo City Jazz Band and who died on July 26, 1992, and to whom Chuck
Reiley dedicated a CD. Anybody have any idea who he's talking about?
Anyway, here's hoping George will announce it soon, but you can
probably persuade him to send you a copy now if you enclose some
negotiable securities with your order.
