Another point Doug is:

The venue you are using is probably already paying them a license fee which 
should cover you and your event, and you are probably paying the pro propionate 
rate in the rent you pay for using the venue.   This would also pertain to 
any and all other non profit jazz societies, even though some of you may have 
rolled over and played dead and have been paying these sharks for many years.

Another reason to tell them to get stuffed.
