Dear Bill,
Thanks to your own generosity I first encountered this
Bolden tune whistled by Bunk in the interview you mention. (American
Music 10" LP 64). He said he didn't know its name. Humphrey Lyttleton
recorded it as Bunk Remembers on his Calligraph LP. It also appeared
played by Wynton Marsalis in the Bolden segment of Ken Burns TV
documentary and an excerpt from a version by Chris Tyle's Silver Leaf
Jazz Band was also played on the sound track. Hal Smith advised that
the excerpt was from a Stomp Off recording where it was called Makin
Runs. To the best of my knowledge that was the first time it appeared
with that title. I believe this was an allusion to Bunk's interview
where he said Bolden's Band didn't play solos but called them runs.
I have heard Ashley's recording and he kindly supplied the chords. You
may already have acquired recent The Gota River Jazzmen CD "I Thought I
heard Buddy Bolden Play"on which they also play the piece under the
title Makin Runs. Ingemar Wagerman did the research for that and he has
offered me a copy of the lead sheet.

thanks again
Dan Hardie
