PRESS RELEASE

THE PLOUGHBOY JAZZ BAND

24 June 2004 - Clevedon Jazz Club

A very welcome return visit to Clevedon Jazz Club's Walton Park venue for a very entertaining band from North Devon - The Ploughboy Jazz Band, so named because its original personnel consisted of off-duty farmers. In great demand throughout the Southwest, they are now regular performers and the 'host band' at their local Bude Jazz Festival.

Relaxed and melodious in the true New Orleans style, they have developed a wide repertoire over the last twenty years. The leader, and the only founder member left in the band, is Bob Manuel on trombone. George Cooke has been with the band for about 12 years and plays clarinet. Angus Thompson is another long time member of the band on cornet and completes a very experienced and able front line. The excellent rhythm section comprises John Baker on banjo, Eddie Adcock on drums and Steve Tucker on bass. There are no 'stars' in this band - they all work for one another and share the vocals.

Many years ago, there was a regular second red player in the band, and this format is sometimes still used. One such time will be on Thursday 24 June at Clevedon Jazz Club when Stan Thomas will be that second man on second clarinet and saxophone.

The doors at Clevedon Jazz Club's Walton Park Hotel venue open at 8pm, the music starts at 8.30pm and its £6 'on the door'. Further details of this and all other Clevedon Jazz Club events, and Club membership - members get a substantial discount on admission charges! - are available from Trev on 01275 343210 or from the Club's web site at http://www.clevedonjazzclub.co.uk.
