Folks--
Herewith are some assorted impressions of the Sacramento Jazz
Jubilee last weekend:
A number of us had dinner together and then played some impromptu
dixieland on a "grassy knoll" in one of the Cal Expo RV parking-lots.
We'll try to do it again next year, with a little better advance
notice and more support at the parking-lot.
The Jubilee didn't seem any smaller than last year, as the crowds
were still large and enthusiastic (and always walking too slowly in
front of me). After it was over, however, it occurred to me that it
was a little strange not to have a number of players/bands there,
such as Jim Cullum, Leon Oakley, Bob Schulz, the Titan Hot 7
(although Bob Draga was his usual peripatetic whirlwind), Kim Cusak,
Mike Walbridge, and Tom Bartlett (among others).
We had a nice F2F/BMP at the Delta King, although some members
couldn't make it there.
One of the new bands i heard was the Buffalo Ridge Jazz Band from
Cincinnati, and they were quite good, aided of course by Jim Maihack
sitting in and on one tune singing and playing solos on tuba,
trombone, trumpet, banjo, and piano.
The Uptown Lowdown band (always one of my favorites) played one
of my favorite songs from an old Turk Murphy LP, "I Had Someone Else
(Before I Had You)", and i was pleased to see others beside myself
quietly mouthing the words to the song (which even had a second set
of lyrics i hadn't heard before).
I finally got to hear Buddy Apfel play tuba, with the Buck Creek
Jazz Band, and he was as good as i've heard. I'm glad to see that
there are now some other tuba-pickers from Carson City besides me.
All in all, another fun festival, but it's too bad that Jan
Nichols, Will Connelly, and Rebecca and Jim Thompson couldn't make it
this year.
