In 1979 & '80, my daughter Molly was in the West Coast Production of the
Broadway show, "Annie." It was playing at the Shubert Theater in LA.
Unlike Carnegie Hall, the acoustics at the Shubert are not the greatest.
I remember hanging out with the sound crew during the tech rehearsals.
They had speakers for the balcony audience. They put a slight delay in the
sound system so that the sound from the stage arrived in the balcony exactly
at the same time that the speakers delivered the sound. Thus, there was no
echo affect.
Without the delay, the audience would have heard the speaker slightly before
the sound from the stage reached them.
And, you wanna talk about echo? Try making an announcement on the P.A. in a
