Dan,
I am the one who started the (as I originally stated) unscientific survey
last Friday. The goal I originally indicated was to see what kinds of
people are on the DJML.
Of the 400 members, I was curious as to how many are "professional
musicians" (my use of the word professional started lots of fireworks), band
leaders, drummers, trombone players, trumpet players, clarinet players,
string bass, tuba/sousaphone, piano, banjo/guitar, washboard, fans of OKOM,
festival directors, etc.
Other categories have since been added as people respond. These include:
promoter, record producer/engineer, singer, publisher, semi-conductor,
lurker, tap dancer, valve trombone, violin, tambourine, and sand
can(whatever that is?).
I didn't put together any kind of a survey form since I figured people would
simply reply and say what categories applied to them. I have been keeping
track of the responses on a legal pad (making a hash mark in each category
as they come in). I had someone suggest keeping track of the results in an
Excel spread sheet. I don't see the need quite yet.
As I said, this is very unscientific, but the results so far are kind of
interesting. I'll post the results thus far later today for all to see.
If you would like to do a more scientific and professional survey of DJML,
by all means go ahead and let me know if I can help in any way.
This survey has resulted in a lot of interesting conversation on DJML.

The survey idea is fine but it needs a goal and a manager. Research was my
business for several years at a major ad agency in New York. So far I
haven't
seen a questionnaire or means by which to respond (or did I just miss those
little things?). If anyone wants to draft a
questionnaire with me, I'll help (no bucks required of me) but we need some
kind of goal defined up front. For example, are we going to exclude people
who
do not play at all? who do not play in a band? who do not play full time?
Are
we going to allow less communication with those who are hobbyists vs. full
time professionals? What if we make money playing but also make money doing
something else--such as collecting garbage or working for a bail bond firm?
Like I
said, we need a goal and a manager. Anyone want to talk to me?
