If there is room in the case, pad the top, bottom and sides of the snare.
Loosen the heads a bit, of course.  You can always rivet on an extra belt to
help keep the case together.  Have you considered constructing a simple wood
case for the cymbals?  Two squares of  plywood, some square stock of the
right thickness, glue and screws ought to do it.

P.S.  If you remove one head all together, you can stuff the drum with
underwear and socks.

Please send suggestions on how to pack a snare and cymbals for air travel.
Jim has a case for his snare, but I am wondering if  and when the baggage
handlers THROW it around, it will burst open.  The cymbals seem to be a
little oversized for carry on.

He is flying Southwest.
