Bill Gunter writes that the Columbus Washboard Company makes the best
washboards. While acknowledging Bill's encyclopedic knowledge of the
subject, I must respectfully beg to differ. The best washboards are
indubitably manufactured by the Imperial Washboard and Carriage-Whip
Manufactory (incorporating the Gothic Blimp Works) of
Stratford-under-Scratchit, Worcestershire. Made of high-tensile molybdenum
steel and standard issue to British Army bands since 1807, they are
virtually indestructible and have been proven in action on the North-West
Frontier, in the Crimean War and during the late Indian Mutiny (where an
improvised barricade made up of the standard issue Number 14 board proved
impermeable even to medium-bore cannon-shot at the Siege of Murghapore in
1856). They are used to best effect with "Dorcas" Brand thimbles. I rest my
case!
