Richard, it was really only the Yerba Buena that had the two trumpets when
the West Coast Revival was born in San Francisco, and even that went down to
one when Scobey left to start his own (one trumpet) band. The Castle
Jazzband, Turk Murphy's various outfits and other pioneering West Coast
bands were all one-trumpet (or cornet) outfits. As Steve Barbone said
earlier, the style relies very much on a distinct two-beat rhythm (banjo and
tuba) plus a characteristic "classic era" repertoire, and that really gives
it its specific 'sound' as much as the twin-trumpet front line - there are
quite a few bands around with two trumpets that sound quite unlike the West
Coast revivalists, but a lot of one-trumpet bands that really recall Turk
and Lu. Well, that's my take on it, anyway!
