I can see how, under fully acoustic situations, a band might wish to put
the piano in front of the brass, but under amplified rules, I believe
the rhythm section should sit behind the front line winds.   Our pianist
would have a fit if he had us blowing right down on top of him.

Another thought, if you're a trombonist, is to put the 'bone to the
right of the trumpeter (trombonist's left shoulder next to the
trumpeter's right) if there is only one microphone for the two horns.
This allows the trombone bell to be aimed at the mike without having to
stand at an angle to get "your sound in there".  We normally prefer one
mike, as that allows the two of us (there is no reedman) to get our own
balance...by physically moving, and not leave that up to some sound guy.

I personally like to have the drummer behind me.  I like to feel that
extra kick right behind me!  The air pumping out of the small hole in
the front skin of the bass drum can create weird feelings on your pant's
leg, but that's just something one must put up with!  :>
