How about this idea as a unique new event at a jazz festival near you.
Tickets could be sold for admission to the 45 minute "Jazz Séance"
performance where a spiritualist/actor puts on a big act by raising the
spirits of Bix, Buddy, Louis and the rest. Different shows could feature
the spirits of different jazz greats.
Set the mood with low light and a well placed spotlight shining on a crystal
ball. Have some very light mystical music playing in the distance and
demand absolute silence from the audience. After all it is easier to summon
the after life if it is quiet. You could even have everyone hold hands and
think deeply about their favorite musician who has parted this world.
The spiritualist could make a big production out of conjuring up the jazz
spirits. Hidden actors' voices could "mysteriously" talk to the audience in
the "voice" of the great long, lost jazz legends, tell a few stories and
jokes (in character) about what it's like to be dead and in jazz heaven with
cats like Bix, and the rest.
"Jazz Heaven's a pretty good place to be, except the liquor cabinet is
always empty when Bix is around..."
The jazz legend featured at any particular moment could strike up his band
(actually a group of off-stage musicians) to play a signature tune.
Wouldn't you just love to hear what Buddy Bolden really sounded like?
Of course this would all be scripted and the tunes would be worked out in
advance.
Has possibilities, don't you think?

trouble is some live guys sound as though they're dead, sort of like
watching paint dry. So in many cases there is more life in the old
recordings than in current performances
