Press Release

Annie Hawkins / Dave Bailey New Orleans Quartet

At Princess Alexandra Hospital Social Club, Hamstell Rd, Harlow Essex

Saturday 7th February at 7:30 PM

The unique clarinet star, Dave Bailey, is reunited with
Australian double bass Ace, Annie Hawkins for an ecstatic session of hot,
traditional jazz, New Orleans style, on Saturday, in a special charity
concert in aid of hospital funds.

These two exceptionally talented musicians first played together with the
legendary Ken Colyer Jazzmen during the 1970s. An immediate musical rapport
was struck up, with each player sensing the musical improvisations of the
other. Both performers are highly visual artistes, with Miss Hawkins
slapping and pulling the strings of her big bass in response to darting
clarinet runs from Herr Bailey.

Annie Hawkins, born in Melbourne, Australia, came to England as a member of
Max Collie's Rhythm Aces. She quickly proved to be a popular attraction,
being one of the few ladies of traditional jazz, an almost entirely male
dominated scene.

She worked and recorded with Humphrey Lyttelton and American clarinettist,
Kenny Davern and had a long association with New Orleans icon Sammy
Rimington. Annie leads her own successful band, which has proved to be a big
draw in Europe as well as in the UK.

Dave Bailey, is a one off musician. Totally self taught, he knows very
little about the technicalities of music, yet reaches an emotional depth
rarely achieved by classically trained musicians. Although he sang in his
local choir as a lad, he did not take up the clarinet until he arrived in
Australia, after riding around the world on a motorbike. Pretty soon, his
natural talent enabled him to join the Melbourne based "Yarra Yarra Jazz
Band", with whom he toured Europe, finally ending up back in England. A
spell with the Colyer band and recording dates followed, then a tour with
the Legends of American Dixieland.

In the mid '80s, he moved to Germany, from where he tours the Continent.

The Quartet is completed by the versatile, Tim Phillips, a banjo / guitarist
of great ability and style, and John Petters on drums.

The band recorded a CD "Eye To Eye", a couple of years ago, which received
rave reviews and is selling well.
