Hello all
The composition of the Armstrong band in the Betty Boop cartoon has long
been an issue with musicologists. The problem arises, in part, because we
don't know when the soundtrack was recorded and is complicated by the fact
that the band that Louis' used for recording after he returned from his
English tour (July - November 1932) was quite different to the one he used
before the tour.
Pre-tour, the reed players were Lester Boone, George James and Albert
Wahington; immediately post-tour, Pete Clark, Edgar Sampson and Elmer
Williams. The immediate post-tour band is in fact the Chick Webb orchestra!
I haven't seen the cartoon for ages - is the drummer identifiable?
All the best
Anton
