Dear Stan,
You are right,
The Proper Box 'Spike Jones' budget priced 4CD set is a bit of a mixture so
far as reproduction is concerned.
But it contains some ex-LP material not yet on quality CD reissues, so will
do until something better comes along.
I think you will find that the Bear Family CD Don Ingle was referring to are
the Capitol sides (some unissued) featuring his father's Red Ingle Natural
Seven and are not Spike Jones sides.
It would be great if the German-based Bear Family could do a definitive CD
set of Spike. Their production, research, booklets and remastering quality
is superb.
Listmate Dick Broadie remastered some RCA Spike Jones sides for 2 Avid CDs
which are excellent. However, due to copyright complications, I do not think
that they are available in the US.
Lurker-Dick may wish to expand on this.
To answer your general query regarding Proper Box CDs.
Some are better than others. The compilations and selections are fine, but
the source quality varies.
Kind regards,
Bill.
