Brain Harvey writes:

"There is no such thing as a Dixieland tune."

Oh, yes there is, Brian. Most of the tunes written by members of the
Original Dixieland Jazz Band such as Nick LaRocca, Henry Ragas, Larry
Shields, etc. for their original 1917 Victor recordings are definitely
right in the bull's eye of anyone's definition of Dixieland tunes. To
deny this is being just plain silly and contrary to common sense.

Here is a partial list, all of which are in the current Jim Cullum Jazz
Band playlist:

At the Jazz Band Ball
Bluin' the Blues
Clarinet Marmalade
Original Dixieland One-Step
Fidgety Feet
Ostrich Walk
Tiger Rag

There are others by the New Orleans Rhythm Kings such as Tin Roof Blues,
etc. that are just as definitely Dixieland tunes.

Brian, I recommend very highly that you visit the following web page:

http://www.redhotjazz.com/odjb.html

and listen very carefully to the recordings linked therein. These were
the first jazz recordings to gain widespread attention. The ODJB was an
inspiration for the next generation of jazzmen, including Bix and a host
of others.

These tunes are all played regularly by many, many jazz bands and are
commonly referred to as "the Dixieland tunes." There is just no other
meaningful way to designate them.
