God’s Music: Shall We Gather at the River?
Jay Weigel
with Phillip Manuel, Ellen Frohnmayer, Leah Chase,
Reverend Lois Dejean and her gospel choir, and a chamber ensemble
Mr. Weigel, director of the Contemporary Arts Center, creates compositions
that integrate the music of New Orleans with the classical written tradition.
Focusing on the river as a prevalent symbol in traditional spirituals, Mr.
Weigel will discuss his work The River May Cry, commissioned for the opening of
the Ogden Museum of Southern Art, and the influence of New Orleans gospel music
on his compositions. Performances of spirituals; arrangements written for
Mahalia Jackson, now in the Bill Russell Collection; and Jay Weigel’s music will
illustrate the lecture.
Bill Russell was a musician and avid collector of materials that chronicle
the birth and growth of jazz in New Orleans. His collection, including the
papers of Mahalia Jackson, is housed in the Williams Research Center of The
Collection.
