Went down to Andy's Jazz Club in Chicago last evening to hear The Windy
City AllStars, led by Russ Phillips (trb.), with Bob Neighbor (cornet),
Kim Cusak (clar), and a fill-in rhythm section of Paul Asaro (piano),
Doug Hayes (bass) and Jerry Coleman (drs.)
What a great group, playing wonderful Eddie Condon style 4 beat jazz.
Phillips is a virtuoso bone player, with a warmth of tone and marvelous
phrasing. Cusak was having a spectacular night and was cookin' away.
Neighbor (who hails from Oakland)shoud be famliar to West Coast fans,
as he played with Turk Murphy among many others out there.
Paul Asaro is a young man, well versed in stride and rag, along with
conventional jazz styling.
What a band! They're at Andy's each Thursday from l5-8:30, so if your
in Chicago, this is one spot you "OKOM" fans ought to hit.
Just thought I'd pass this on.
Regards, Harold Smith
