I recorded parts of the 99Sacto fest on my little DAT and I treasure these snippets from several of the venues. I kind of think that after buying airline tickets from Florida to SACTO and paying admission to the fest, it is not necessary to buy any CDs unless I particularly want one or two. I have bought many , many CDs in my life time.
As far as I know, some of what I recorded in 99 never made it to commercial CD. Lets see
a trombone duel between Russ Phillips and a banjo player-turned-trombonist who I cant name at the moment,{edit- Bill Dendle}on the tune I Never Knew, a rendition of Sing, Sing, Sing by the Bill Allred band, and one of the last performances of trombonist Speigle Wilcox who died shortly after.
Anyway, I dont believe anyone there gave a rats
that I was recording.
Now that I have the floor I have comments on another subject altogether: *Putting LPs on CD(for private use only):
I have been doing this for a while and have put several of my collection on CD and have bought used LPs for the purpose of putting them on CD and then giving the LPs to Salvation Army. My question for you OKOMers out there:
Can you help me with naming the sidemen on an LP I just paid someone online $25 for, only to get it in the mail and when I played it, none of the band members are named other than the leader on the gig- Dave Remington, trombone.
This is what the jacket notes say (short)
DIXIE/CHICAGO STYLE
DAVE REMINGTON
In this album you will hear the core of Daves regular group supplemented by the key men from one of the best known dixieland bands in the world (edit note:They certainly are not well known here)and I wish we could use their names, for their being on this album only proves a tribute to Daves musicianship. Why supplement an established group with outside musicians you may ask. The answer if you know Dave is very simply a matter of progression and experimentation with new sounds and ideas in arranging that require the avante garde Dixieland musicians.
The album, should anyone be of help in identifying the mystery musicians is VEE JAY LP 3030. Not to be confused with two other VEE JAY Remington products Danceable Dixieland Jazz, or VEE JAY LP 3009- which I own- Dixieland on the Rocks.
I am partial toward knowing the names of sidemen on an LP. Some I can recognize by sound, but on this record I cannot. HELP! One last thing- anyone have an e-mail addy for Dave Remington? The last time I talked to Dave was in 1956-57 in Chicago. Dave and I and Chuck Hedges used to share bandstands for a while back then.
