No no no - Jazz is the sound produced by jazz musicians. Applause is the
sound produced by an audience.

Jazz musicians are what they are (good, bad, amateur, professional, smart,
dumb, etc.) and there are many varieties.

Audiences, on the other hand, are always the same (some individuals good,
some individuals bad, some individuals smart, some individuals dumb and, as
a whole, virtually always fickle).

Don't confuse the two.

Audiences are gullable . . . they can be hoodwinked . . . they are rarely
discriminating and even if they are you can't depend on consistency of
perception.

Can you imagine how many pages it would take to completely describe the
dynamics of performance and perception? Scads! That's how many!

There is good jazz and there are appreciative audiences but I'm not going to
share with anybody the secrets of how good jazz is produced and how good
audiences perceive it.

Good luck,

Bill "Love that jazz" Gunter
