The Chicago Six were playing at the Penticton Jazz Festival a couple of
years ago. Bob Finch was introducing a number and part of the patter was
that Dick Hamilton one of the trumpet players would do a solo on his
alto horn. He mentioned that the horn had previously belonged to Dick
Cary. He went on to tell this story about Dick Cary and the horn.

Bob Finch and Dick Cary were playing together at a festival in the
mountains, Mammoth, I think he said. The weather was freezing overnight
and due to some scheduling problems they had to do an outside breakfast
set. The steps to the stage still had ice on them and they were
discussing how the set would go. According to Bob, Dick Cary took his
morning coffee and poured it in the bell of the alto, sloshed it around
a few times and dumped it and was then ready to play.

Apparently he didn't believe in the frozen horn theory either.
