Definitely agree.  Was going to suggest you listen to lots of Frank Assunto, 
but didn't 'cause he doesn't rank near the top of popular trumpet greats.  
Glad you ran across him yourself. Get some of his early stuff on AudioFidelity, 
then later stuff on Columbia and then Decca.

Always very melodic, never too many notes, and covers the spectrum from "lots 
of fire" to smooth ballads.

Maybe not one of the "greats" but near the top for us.
