By coincidence, just listened over dinner to the 1930 Irving Mills recording
of this, with vocal by 15 year old Charlie Teagarden. The first two verses
were identical with Phil Harris' later version, then reverted to "Let her
go, let her go" etc, but with one key difference (pedants read on - all
others delete this now!). I've always wondered why vocalists sing about a
DEAD woman
Let her go, let her go, God bless her,
Wherever she may be
She may search this wide world over,
But she'll never find a sweet man like me.
How can a dead woman go searching anywhere? Well, Little T (at 15) must have
shared my concern, cos he sings:
Let her go, let her go, God bless her,
Wherever she may be
She could have searched this wide world over
She would never have found a sweet man like me.
Check it out! Gramatically and logically correct! I shall henceforth always
sing this verse this way, but adding the splendid introduction from the
Harris version. Ain't the internet wonderful?
Mike D.
