[Dixielandjazz] Help

I have decided to buy a sousaphone. I found a good one, a Miraphone 4 valve 
in great shape.
BUT........when you play it the bell "rings".
Have any of you ever experianced this on your horn ?
Do any of you know a solution to this problem other than holding on to the 
bell with your free hand while playing ?
