I recall attending a concert with Louis Armstrong, Bix Biderbecke and Buddy
Bolden all playing together, where Thomas Edison did the audio work. Ella
Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday and Ethel Waters were outstanding as were Kate
and Bessie Smith Fats Waller, Art Tatum, Liberace and Thenolious Monk
traded choruses on piano and the highlight of the evening was Count Basie in
a battle of the bands with the Original Dixieland Jass Band. On second
thought, that might have been the night I heard the George Shearing Quartet
and got drunk. As the man said, "It was about 50 years ago, and my memory
is not what I seem to recall that it used to be, although I could be wrong
about that, too." :-)
