Folks--
     I just happened to see a link to this on UT's home page 
(http://www.utexas.edu) yesterday, too late to find out any more 
about it, but it seems closely connected with what a lot of us do and 
think about: collect and try to preserve our own audio-collections. 
I didn't see anything related specifically to jazz in the 
descriptions, but i thought i'd pass this info along in case any of 
you are interested or would like to follow up on it.  I'm glad there 
are groups trying to preserve audio collections, as (at least to me) 
an old original recording of early jazz is at least as deserving to 
be kept as an early copy of a book or article from the same period.

Realizing the growing need for a forum on audio preservation, the 
Preservation and Conservation Studies program of the School of 
Information at the University of Texas at Austin, the Library of 
Congress, the National Recording Preservation Board, and the 
Association of Research Libraries are co-sponsoring Sound Savings: 
Preserving Audio Collections.

The symposium will be held in Austin, Texas, July 24-26, 2003, in the 
newly renovated Harry Ransom Humanities Research Center on the UT 
campus. Sound Savings will feature talks by experts in the field of 
audio preservation on topics ranging from assessing the preservation 
needs of audio collections to creating, preserving, and making 
publicly available digitally reformatted audio recordings. For more

Scheduled Presentations

Sound Savings will take place the fourth weekend of July. Short 
descriptions of scheduled presentations and the speakers are 
available through the following links. The topics covered include 
assessing preservation needs, setting priorities, reformatting 
technologies, archiving, intellectual property issues and planning 
for the future. In addition to speakers the symposium will also 
include "Breakout" session in which conference attendees can discuss 
topics covered.
