Dear Grahame,
Regarding your comment: >I don't recall bluesman Gary Davis referred to as
"Blind".
He was referred to as Reverend Gary Davis.<
Sorry, but he was.
Refer to the blues bible 'Blues Who's Who' by Sheldon Harris (Da Capo. 1979).
Davis, Rev "Blind" Gary D (aka: Blind Gary). 1896-1972.
Ordained minister of Missionary Baptist Congregation Church in 1940.
Recorded post-war for Asch, Lennox, Stinson, Folk-Lyric, Folkways, etc .and made
a big hit touring (including Canada & UK) in the late 50s, 60s, early 70s.
This is the 'Blind Gary' who recorded for ARC in 1935.
Two and a bit pages with photograph.
Much too long to post here.
Complete recorded works 1935-1949 available on Document DOCD 5060.
Refer also to 'Blues and Gospel Records', 4th edition 1890-1943 (Dixon, Godrich,
Rye. Oxford 1997).
Jazz Jerry's little joke-poke certainly took a turn for the serious, didn't it?

Very kind regards,
Bill.
