There is a recording "Bob Greene's The World of Jelly Roll Morton", where
this is explained. Tommy Benford, the drummer of some of Jelly's recordings
played on this album. Bob Greene does the monologue for this album and
states the fact that the drums would cause a skip of the needle out of the
track. What some drummers found out they could do was play the drum cases,
instead. An example of this is showcased in the song Wolverine Blues.
I've loved this album for quite a few years now, released in 1974.
