Just returned from the North Sea Jazz Festival in The Hague (The
Netherlands) (2nd day - Saturday 12 July 2003)

The North Sea Jazz Festival is a very extensive one with numerous stages and
groups with all kinds of jazz-styles from big bands up to the most modern
forms of jazz-pop-rock-dance music, it is very successfully and popular,
but it is also very crowdie. I heard that 70,000 tickets were sold for the
three days, so it is sometimes difficult to get inside some concerts.
But ..... I enjoyed myself very much.

I visited the concert of the Charlie Haden's American Dream Quartet with
Michael Brecker on tenorsax and Brad Mehldau on piano and strings (by
students of the The Hague conservatory of music.). This American dream
project contains very impressive music.

Another successful concert was the Dutch Piet Noordijk, the alto-saxophonist
who presented his "Piet plays Frank" CD , with the music of Frank Sinatra.
The fabulous Dutch guitar player Jesse van Ruller was part of this concert.

I visited a concert of the Bigband of the Hague Conservatory conducted by
the legendary-master trombone player Slide Hampton. Although his age still
very expressive !!

One of the best performances I saw was the Lou Donaldson Quartet with Dr.
Lonnie Smith on Hammond and the very good guitar player Randy Johnston and
Fukushi Tainaka on drums. It was a very "soulful" concert with a lot of
humor and good music. Parts of this concert were on television last night.
Also Lou's tone is still impressive.

The final concert I visited was from the Cuban piano player Ramón Valle and
his Quintet with Roy Hargrove, the best trumpet player of the young
generation ( http://members.lycos.nl/keepswinging/Roy%20Hargrove.html ), but
it was already two o'clock in the morning, so I was to tired to enjoy the
concert really and I had to travel back to the south west part of the
Netherlands to see my bed around six O'clock this morning.

On my turntable now: Sonny Clark Trio
