Had BG's 38 Carnegie Hall Concert been recorded, I likely wouldn't have
grown up loving jazz. When my dad brought home a box of Columbia extended
play records the size of a 45 rpm, but I belive spun at 33 1/3 rpm, I was
enthralled with the music. In addition to influencing me as a jazz fan and
later, a jazz musician, this recording established a bond between my dad and
myself that lasted to the day he died.

Little did I know in the mid 1950s in my small midwestern home town of
Waverly Iowa that I would know Albert Marx, the man responsible for the
recording being made, or that I would play with Bobby Hackett, Teddy
Wilson, Jess Stacey and Martha Tilton, all who were on that semimal
recording. I even got to visit a few hours with Lionel Hampton who, of
course, was featured with BG's small groups at Carnegie as well as many
times elsewhere.

When I found out I had cancer about 3 months ago, I not only focused on the
future but also the past. Not many have been as blessed as I have to
actually see so many childhood dreams fulfilled. And as much fun \as I've
had, I truely believe the best is yet to come.
