[Dixielandjazz] DD Brass band and others of that ilk

>>The statement should probably read, "they don't play authentic jazz".
That
is the classification George Buck puts on what some folks call traditional
jazz. They have created a "brass band" sound of their own. It isn't even
like some of the Brass Bands heard now in New Orleans.<<

I am not a fan of the Dirty Dozen brass band....In fact, I am not that
crazy about brass bands in general. But why play like every other brass
band. The reason for their "success" is probably because they are a little
different. The people in entertainment and music who have made it really
big are the ones who were different from all the others.
There are only two requirements that I know of to call music jazz:
    It must have improvisation.
    It must swing.
Who can vouch for "authenticity"? When Louis played it, was it regarded
as authentic? How about when Buddy Bolden played it? I don't think
so...It was probably regarded as something new. If it has the two above
ingredients, it's authentic.
    Pat Cooke
