Well I don't know about that. While a 5 string is rarely considered part of
the OKOM style of jazz, it is, nevertheless, a great instrument. Basically
it's tuned like a plectrum though the playing style is vastly diffrerent.
I occasionally use a 5 string when The Boondockers (my band) plays "The
World Is Waiting for the Sunrise." It starts out as a banjo solo featuring
our banjoist, Ralph Thompson. Then Bob Ringwald stands up from the piano and
joins in with his banjo. Then Jim Maihack swaps his trombone for a banjo and
joins in. Gary Church, cornet, then switches to banjo. finally I put down
the washboard and pick up my 5 string and we have become a Banjo-Rama! The 5
string is a lovely accompaniment to the madness on stage.
So there, Burt!
Respectully submitted,
Bill "Love that 5-string" Gunter
