"Gate" is short for "Gatemouth", one of several such humorous epithets -
e.g. "Dippermouth", "Slotmouth", and of course "Satchelmouth".

A recorded example (the first?) of its use can be heard on "Tight Like
This" by Louis Armstrong and His Savoy Ballroom Five (December 12 1928);
just before Louis's last chorus someone says "Oh it's tight like that,
Gate."

Incidentally, Louis's three choruses on this number would be a strong
contender for my favourite Armstrong solo - building from a slow
introspective beginning to an impassioned climax, helped of course by the
extremely simple but effective riff backing, presumably arranged by Don
Redman.
