There's the test, in my opinion, of a good modern jazz musician.  If he
can sit in with a band playing OKOM, it tells me that this guy has paid
his dues to get where he is.  Tells me he has come to jazz through the
beginnings, and not just started in the middle somewhere.  You can hear
it the minute a sit in starts playing....or singing.  "Yeah, this
guy/gal has been around!"  Or, the other extreme, "there's no basics to
the way this one blows".
