One very fine musician and amputee who may get
overlooked is the New Orleans trombonist Joe "Red"
Margiotta. Despite having only one arm, he continued
to play with trumpeter Tony Fougerat's Kings of
Poverty and recorded an album with them on GHB called
"Every Man a King". There's an article by Whitney
Balliett concerning a visit he made to New Orleans in
the mid-1960s in which he describes hearing Margiotta
with Fougerat at a dance at Munster's Bar. I don't
have the full reference for it, but it was reprinted
as the preface to Lee Friedlander's book of
photographs "The Jazz People of New Orleans."
