I'm with you, Bill but unfortunately traditional military drum & bugle
corps in the U.S. are gone to oblivion. These hideous civilian 'Drum' corps
have poisoned that scene so that even the US Marine Corps Drum & Bugle Corps
looks and sounds like the Baja Marimba band.
Their drums sounds like toy drums and their bugles are neither bugles nor
legitimate band instruments...they are weird rube goldberg concoctions.
Many years ago I had the pleasure and honor of serving with the 3rd. Marine
Division Band on trombone and I Played scotch bass drum with the drum & bugle
corps that was part of the field band. Our drums sounded like drums and the
bugles were bugles. When the whole works cranked up a Sousa classic on
parade it was really something.
You are right, the annual Edinburgh Military Tattoo is really something. I'
ve never been there but have some videos. The British military bands and
pipe bands maintain their musical traditions and don't succumb to every
american fad that comes along.
Tommy Loy went to the Edinburgh Festival with a jazz group last year and I
told him to be sure and catch the Military Tattoo. He told me that they were
sold out and he couldn't get in.
